Scoring & Merging
Two tiles with the same number merge into one worth their sum whenever they collide during a slide -- merge two 4s and you get an 8, merge two 1024s and you get the 2048 tile. This version tracks progress a little differently from the original: instead of a running point total, the number shown as your "Best" is simply the value of the highest tile currently on the board, so it updates the instant you create a bigger tile rather than only at the end of a round.
Board & Tile Spawns
Every move that shifts at least one tile spawns a new one in an empty square afterward -- 90% of the time it's a 2, and 10% of the time it's a 4. With the 4×4 board full, the game ends once no two adjacent tiles (left-right or up-down) share the same number, since at that point no legal move remains.
Your Board Is Saved
2048 is one of the few games on the site with save-and-continue built in: close the tab mid-game and your exact board is restored automatically next time you open it, clearing only once you truly run out of moves.
Strategy
Keep your highest tile anchored in one corner and build a descending gradient out from it, rather than chasing merges in the center of the board -- a scrambled middle is the most common way a board gets stuck.
Common Mistakes
Swiping in whatever direction has an open merge, without a consistent corner strategy, is the fastest way to fragment the board into unmergeable pairs. Moving away from your anchor corner "just to see" is usually what breaks a good position.
