Snake Game: 7 Tips for a Higher High Score
Snake is one of the oldest arcade formulas, and it's still deceptively hard to master. As your snake grows longer, the margin for error shrinks fast. Here are seven tips to help you push past your previous best.
1. Hug the Edges Early
In the early game when your snake is short, staying near the walls gives you more predictable space to maneuver and leaves the center of the board open for later, when you'll need room to loop around safely.
2. Think in Loops, Not Lines
Long snakes need repeatable patterns. Many experienced players default to a loose spiral or boustrophedon (back-and-forth) pattern that systematically covers the board while keeping the snake's body predictable.
3. Never Chase Food Directly
It's tempting to beeline for the nearest food, but that can trap you against a wall or your own tail. Instead, plan a route that collects food as a byproduct of a safe movement pattern.
4. Leave Yourself an Exit
Before committing to a turn, ask: after this move, do I still have at least one safe direction available? Good Snake players are always thinking one or two moves ahead, not just reacting to the current position.
5. Slow Down on Mobile
On touch controls, overly fast swipes can register the wrong direction. A slightly more deliberate swipe technique reduces accidental misfires that end runs prematurely.
6. Use the Center Sparingly
The center of the board is useful real estate late in the game. Try not to fill it in with your body early on — save it as a safety zone for when your snake gets long.
7. Review Your Deaths
Notice a pattern in how your runs usually end? Most players die the same way repeatedly (cutting off their own tail in a corner, for example). Identifying your personal failure pattern is the fastest way to improve.
